Keywords for Improved SEO

October 7th, 2008 | Posted in Tips, SEO, Links |

Last year I wrote a post about ten simple guidelines for improved search engines ranking. This post concentrates on keywords usage. There is a lot more to search engines optimisation than the points below, but here are a few simple things you can do today to improve your website’s search engines visibility:

  1. Page URL: Have keywords present in site’s URLs. Separate keywords in the URL with a hyphen (preferably) or an underscore.
  2. Head Section:
    • Try to avoid using stop words in the <title> tag. Stop words are such as “and, on, a, the, for, about, are, that, were, by, of…”
    • Have keyword close to the beginning of the <title> tag
    • The higher the keyword weight in <meta name="keywords"… > tag, the better. Use maximum of eight to twelve keywords.
    • Do not have <meta name="description"… > too long
    • If your site is indexed on the Open Directory Project, add: <meta name="robots" content="noodp" />
  3. Body Section:
    • Include keywords at the start and end of the body text. The web page should start with text and not an image of Flash file.
    • Keywords in body text should constitute at least two percent. Also, consider using different forms of the keywords.
    • Include keywords in images’ alt and title attributes.
    • Include in-text links with keywords in them and in their title attributes.
  4. Main Navigation: include keywords in the main navigation’s link’s title attributes.
  5. Use a semantic page structure and include keywords in heading tags.
